As an afternoon project, I decided to make a top that I could wear to Roller Derby bouts. Last Christmas, my mum thought I would like some cheap fabric pens (bless her, I can't fathom why she thought it was a good idea, but I finally came up with something to do with them).
The top features the slogan "get hurt in a skirt" from a sticker that I bought at a merch stand when I was at a derby bout; and a skate with a heart on the side.
I went through all the fonts on my computer (I like fonts, so I have a growing collection), but decided that the stencil font matched the text (and application) best. So I copied down the phrase to make a... well, a stencil. Image: [link]
I cut out the stencil with a craft knife, making a glorious mess by smudging pencil everywhere - including on my white desk. Image: [link]
I used the stencil and the fabric pen to get the shape of the letters right. I decided that I liked the look of filling in the R and A completely, and I really like the almost "sketchy" home-made look. As the singlet top is stretchy, it was a bit hard to use what is essentially a felt-tip pen, I had to keep stretching the fabric to colour it in.
The skate is copied (and embellished upon) from some random clip art I found using a google search, I felt that just the text was a tad boring, and it needed something to make it look less like a slogan slapped carelessly on a shirt.
I've decided to keep the stencil, I'm thinking of transferring it onto a sheet of plastic (more cutting out! hooray!) so I have a long-lasting stencil I can use to make more shirts.
