January is almost over now, so it seems like a good time to reflect back on how the first 30 days of 2012 have gone. That, and the fact that I hit a major milestone last night.
One of the biggest problems I faced when working on Broken Wings was not knowing where I was up to. Every time I shelved the project & came back for another round I would start at the beginning again. The result was that the opening chapters have been tweaked within a mere inch of their lives, while later chapters languish in drafting hell, never to see the editor's pen. I needed to come up with a way to tell myself "no, leave this alone, work on something else".
Last year I came up with the idea of locking chapters. While it had no effect on the novel itself, it was a visual reminder that, no matter how much I wanted to, those chapters were off limits for the time being. As I progress - learning, creating, remembering more about the world in which my novel is set - I come across information that I want to change back in Chapters 1 or 2. But these chapters are locked, all I can do is make a note for myself and carry on.
Last night I "locked" chapter 14 of 28. That officially puts me halfway through. Now, I know that when I reach the other end I'm going to "unlock" chapter 1 and start the process over, but the fact that "halfway" is somewhat... misguided is not the point.
This is the first time I've been able to (and I can't emphasise this strongly enough) SEE the progress I've been making. And I can tell you this: it feels great. Knowing I can progress means knowing I can keep going. My efforts aren't futile.
Maybe in a month from now I'll be coming back and saying that I've completed my first rewrite. Maybe in two months. Either way, it's a day that's coming & a day I can track my progress towards.

Reality is Unrealistic: Same Character, 1 Year On
A year ago I completed a character portrait of Petty Officer Cole Ormont, a surgeon in the Galactic Republic Navy. I was never particularly happy with the way the face turned out, thought I was more than pleased with the rest. Over the last 11 months, I've probably finished more pieces than I have in the last 11 years. Well, that might be a slight exaggeration, but I've definitely done more art than any other point in my life.
The follow-up to last year's Star Wars game is coming up at the end of the month, and I decided that Cole, now a Captain, needed a new portrait. Besides wanting to address my dissatisfaction with the way I'd drawn
2012: The Year of Broken Wings
I've been working on Broken Wings for a long time now. When I first started, it was just a seed of an idea, something I tapped out to impress a friend. From there it grew, and grew, and it keeps growing even now.
It's been many years. I've continually shelved my novel with promises of "getting back to it". I've looked to my friends for inspiration, for encouragement.
I don't hold much stock in "new year's resolutions". You can make resolutions, set yourself goals at any time of the year. You don't need to wait until January to do that. But as it was the last days of 2011 & the new year was right around the corner, I decided that it w

Those quizzes that get around.
1.) What's your name?
Angell, for as far as you know.
2.) Do you know why you were named that?
Cause I wanted to be.
3.) Are you single or taken?
Single, as at the time of writing.
4.) Have any abilities or powers?
I have the power of Linguistic Anarchy! I take words and mash them together till they sound pretty good.
5.) Stop being a Mary-Sue >.>
But my doctor said I shouldn't go off my meds...
6.) Uh... if you were to get in a fight with a strong wrestler, do you think you'd win?
That depends on whether I win by the power of having boobies. If the wrestler is immune to being flashed, better call my next of kin.
7.) Riiiight... H
